Day Tour |
Full day tour of Athens sights and museums |
Your driver will pick you up from the arranged point and we will start this full day private sightseeing tour of Athens.
As you enter the city center and the tour begins, your first stop will be at the exquisite Panathenian stadium.
Built on the site of the ancient Athenian stadium, entirely from marble, for the first modern Olympic Games of 1896. It is very impressive and well worth a stop.
After the brief stop you will set off towards the Temple of Zeus, a colossal ruined temple that was dedicated to Zeus, king of the Olympian gods.
The remains of this once great temple still inspire awe to the visitors of the site.
Continue onwards via the national gardens for a brief stop outside the Greek parliament.
The traditionally dressed Evzones stand guard outside the building; the changing of the guards is fun to see and get a feeling for Greek modern history.
Your driver will be waiting to take you to the Acropolis.
The Acropolis of Athens
The drop off point is at the entrance of the site. With your camera in hand and your walking shoes on, walk up to the site to enjoy the beauty of these magnificent buildings.
See the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the temple of Athena Nike. The buildings on the Acropolis are considered by many as the most impressive architectural feats of the ancient times.
The Acropolis, and the Parthenon in particular, is the most iconic monument of the ancient Greek civilisation. It continues to stand as a symbol in many ways: it is the symbol of democracy and the Greek civilisation. It also symbolises the beginning of Western civilisation and stands as the icon of European culture.
Your visit to the Acropolis will end and the tour will continue with a walk to the new museum.
The Acropolis Museum
The new Acropolis museum opened in 2004 is one of the newest and one of the most impressive in Europe. Architecturally it is exquisite and the exhibits are laid out in such a way that allow the visitor to understand and appreciate the true beauty of the ancient Greek sculptures.
The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological site-specific museum, housing more than 3.000 famous artefacts from the Athenian Acropolis, the most significant sanctuary of the ancient city.
Interestingly, the archaeological excavation that lies beneath the Museum provides the opportunity to visitors to appreciate both the masterpieces of the Acropolis in the upper levels of the Museum against the remains of the day to day lives of the people that lived in the shadow of the Acropolis over various periods
After the visit to the new Museum, your guide will show you the Plaka area (Athens old quarter).
Walk the Plaka area
The beautiful streets of the Plaka filled with small shops, cafes and taverns has been one of the favorite spots in Athens for years.
In the Plaka you will have time to enjoy lunch (own expense) and take a break before you continue on the tour.
Enjoy the lively atmosphere and the local tastes of Greek cuisine.
A short walk to your vehicle to continue to the last point of the excursion.
Archeological Museum of Athens
It is approximately a 10 minute drive to the archeological museum where you will have time to enjoy the incredible exhibits on display.
This museum is actually the major one in Athens, much older (completed in 1889) than the new Acropolis museum and with a collection of sculptures that is one of the best in the world.
It is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art. It was founded at the end of the 19th century to house and protect antiquities from all over Greece, thus displaying their historical, cultural and artistic value.
Your private guide will provide you with a wealth of information about the exhibits, the history and the techniques used by the ancient Greeks to create them.
The visit to the museum will take us to the end of the tour.
At the exit of the museum your driver will be waiting for you to drive you to the ending point of the tour.
