A lovely half day private tour to cape Sounio |
Your private guide and personal driver will pick you up from the arranged point to start the wonderful excursion to Cape Sounio.
To start the tour enjoy is a beautiful drive of about an hour and a half from Athens to Cape Sounion.
The scenic drive along the Attica Riviera is actually a highlight of the tour as you will enjoy the beautiful seaside leading from Athens all the way to Cape Sounio.
About half way to cape Sounio, the scenery changes from an urban to a more sparsely populated and rugged landscape. The small beaches and seaside resorts make for a very nice drive up to the Cape.
Cape Sounio is the most southern point of Attica and looks on to the Aegean Sea.
At the tip of the cape the ancient Greeks built a magnificent temple to honor the god of the Sea, Poseidon. The temple that stands today was built at the fifth century BC and replaced other buildings that were already built at the area. The site has a very long history not only as a place of worship but also as a strategic vantage point that allowed for shipping lanes to and from Athens to be controlled. As you stand at the Cape you will easily understand how important a location it was since it overlooks the entrance to any ships arriving in Athens.
The site itself is quite modest, the Doric columns that stand today are a reminder of what the site used to be; it is very easily understood how impressive this site must have been. Only some columns of the Sounion temple stand today, but when intact it would have closely resembled the contemporary and well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus beneath the Acropolis.
Just standing at the foot of the temple and looking out to sea it is as if we are standing on the bow of a ship looking out to the Aegean Sea. The waves crashing on the cape and us standing atop commanding the ancient shipping lanes. It is awe inspiring and really well worth the visit.
Your personal guide will explain and give you insights about the sight, the history and the legends surrounding it. Take advantage of being on a private tour and the one to one personal attention your guide will provide. My mother and I took Siva Private Tours for a half-day trip to Cape Sounion to see the Temple of Poseidon. It was a cloudy, cool and windy day in late May, but it made for dramatic pictures of the Temple and the Cape. The temple was remarkably intact and the many partridges on the site were very cute! The drive to Sounion and back was beautifully smooth (thank you, Stavros!) and Gina, our guide, was very engaging and knowledgeable about ancient and modern Greece. After our time at the Cape, we were taken to a lovely restaurant in Vouliagmeni with a view of the Aegean and had a nice four-course set lunch. I would recommend this tour to anyone. Thank you both for a wonderful day!

This 1/2 day tour was amazing. We were promptly picked up at hour hotel by our tour guide, Ioanna and and our driver, Mike. The narration on the driving trip was just enough to make the one hour journey seem very short. We had ample time at the Temple and Ioanna walked us through the entire site and allowed some time to wander on our own. After a coffee at the cafe, we headed back to downtown Athens and our hotel, making an unplanned stop at a beautiful lake on the outskirts of Athens. We were very pleased with Siva Tours

Our guide, Ouramia Panoutsou, was excellent. She was prompt, friendly, knowledgeable about the region, and gave us enough time to learn more about the Temple of Poseidon, Cape Sounion and ended with a tasty lunch at Vouliagmeni. I most appreciated the sense she had of being with us as well as giving us space. And there was no stopping at shops to try to sell us anything. I would highly recommend her for your tour.

Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgable, (Stadi). She never tried to hurry us and gave us as much time as we wanted for pictures. The dinner was also very good with wonderful views of the sunset.
