Day Tour |
An incredible full day private tour to Argolis |
Your driver will pick you up from the hotel (see pickups note) in order to start this wonderful full day tour to Mycenae and Epidaurus.
Corinth Canal
The tour will begin with a scenic drive via the coastal road from Athens towards the Corinth Canal. It will take about an hour to get to Corinth were you shall briefly stop to view it and stretch your legs before entering the Peloponnese peninsula. We will cross the bridge that connects the mainland with the Peloponnese, crossing over the narrow canal.
Mycenae
After the brief stop the tour continues towards Mycenae; one of the most important cities of ancient Greece.
You will walk under the famous Lion gate up to the Mycenaean acropolis and the Palace.
Mycenae is very impressive as it is possible to feel the city as you retrace the steps of the ancients. You will see the tomb of Agamemnon and the ruins of the Cyclopean walls that protected this mighty city.
The citadel of Mycenae, with its strategic position for the control of the Argolid Plain, is the kingdom of the mythical Agamemnon and the most important and richest palatial centre of the Late Bronze Age in Greece.
Its name was given to one of the greatest civilizations of Greek prehistory, the Mycenaean civilization, while the myths related to its history, its rulers and their family members (such as Klytaimnestra, Ifigeneia, Elektra, Orestes) have inspired poets, writers and artists over many centuries, from the ancient to the contemporary times. Significant stages in monumental architecture are still visible in the property, such as the massive defensive walls, the corbelled tholos tombs and the Lions Gate.
Nafplion
Our tour will continue with us driving through the plains of Argos towards the city of Nafplion.
This was the first capital of modern Greece and boasts an impressive Venetian fortress the 'Palamidi'.
Instead of walking up the thousand steps to the fortress, drive up and enjoy the view of Nafplio and the Gulf of Argolis.
From here you will be able to also see the islet of Bourtzi; on top of which stands a fortified castle which seems to be afloat in the middle of the bay of Nafplion.
Setting off from Nafplion we will drive towards the site of Epidaurus.
Epidaurus
Before reaching the site you will stop for lunch at a local tavern and enjoy the regional cuisine. Take your time at lunch and without hurry make our way towards the ancient site (lunch may alternatively be enjoyed in Nafplion).
(see note on including/excluding lunch)
The site of Epidaurus, which is listed as a world heritage site by Unesco, is one of the beautiful and impressive sights in Greece.
With ruins of temples and hospital buildings devoted to the healing gods; it is considered to be the birthplace of Asklepios.
The monuments, particularly the temple of Asklepios, the Tholos and the Theatre are considered some of the purest masterpieces of Greek architecture and date from the 4th century BC.
The vast site, with its temples and hospital buildings devoted to its healing gods, provides valuable insight into the healing cults of Greek and Roman times.
For most travelers Epidaurus is known for the magnificent theater that still stands there – and is still used for plays and other performances.
Enjoy the walk of the grounds leading up to the theater and there check the famous acoustics. The theater is considered a marvel of engineering as the acoustics are unrivaled even by today’s standards.
After your visit to Epidaurus theater walk along the pine filled site towards the exit where your driver will be waiting for us.
Enjoy the dreive back to Athens and your tour will come to an end at your hotel.
